From 2025, freight traffic on European roads will be a lot cleaner. The European Council adopted the first CO2 emission standards for lorries and other heavy goods transport.

In practice, this means that truck manufacturers will have to reduce the CO2 emissions of new vehicles from 2025. Compared to current levels, this will have to decrease by 15% on average. This is an intermediate step as from 2030, the European Council wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%. The regulation applies to the whole of the European Union and will therefore also be directly applicable to all Member States. The adoption of the European Council is the final step in the approval procedure. Previously, the European Parliament and the European Commission have already agreed.

Strict control

The new objectives will be rigorously maintained. It is therefore not an opinion but a binding decision and the violation of this will be fined by means of a contribution for the excess emissions.

Specific measures will also be rolled out to ensure that the actual fuel and energy consumption of heavy vehicles is monitored this data will come from onboard equipment. This will only increase the role of vehicle telematics in the coming years.

Previous figures have shown that the current CO2 emissions from heavy vehicles account for about 27% of total CO2 emissions from road transport. Reducing emissions will therefore greatly reduce overall emissions.

Previously, the Council has already adopted a regulation which describes in detail the new rules on how to monitor and report on CO2 emissions. In this, vehicle telematics plays a very important role.

Telematics is the future

Although the rules for manufacturers will only be in 2025, vehicle telematics already offers the opportunity to gain insight into things such as fuel consumption and the CO2 emissions that are associated with it. In addition to these features, telematics software also offers other cost-saving insights. For example, how the driver deals with the vehicle and whether the vehicle needs a maintenance soon. Telematics software therefore offers not only environmentally conscious but also cost-saving insights. Quickly inquire about what Fleetassist can do for your organization.
