The 2019 climate agreement includes agreements on reducing CO2 emissions. A major contributor to these emissions is motorized traffic. To ensure that our commuting and business travel will reduce CO2 emissions, employers with more than 100 employees must start registering their employees' emissions. This law was originally supposed to take effect Jan. 1, 2023, but it has now become clear that it will not take effect until Jan. 1, 2024.

Registration requirement

Employers must start submitting all information on commuting and business travel annually via a digital platform provided by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). This includes all trips for which employees receive financial compensation or for which a ticket or vehicle is provided to the employee.

Employers do not have to calculate the CO2 emissions themselves. By passing on the means of transportation, the number of kilometers driven and the fuel of the vehicle, the digital platform automatically calculates the CO2 emissions of the employees. For this, it is of course important to have the trip registration of the fleet in good order.

Preserve

With the introduction of the CO2 registration law, there are no consequences yet for the amount of CO2 emitted by your employees. The goal for now is only to gain insight into the amount of emissions. This will allow the government to see whether employers are doing enough on their own to reduce emissions.

You can do a lot yourself to make your fleet more sustainable. For example, take a critical look at your employees' travel movements. Are all miles driven really necessary? Can some of those kilometers be traveled by a more sustainable means of transportation such as public transport or, for example, an electric bicycle? It may also be an option to choose hybrid or all-electric models when purchasing new vehicles. Do you want to be more environmentally conscious with the current fleet of vehicles?
