If you purchase a car, you will have to deal with various taxes. When you purchase the car, you pay passenger car and motorcycle taxes, for the use of the car you pay motor vehicle taxes, and if you use a company car for private journeys, you may have to pay additional taxes.

Tax on passenger cars and motorcycles

The tax on passenger cars and motorcycles (BPM) is the tax to be paid when you buy a new car, van or motorcycle. How much tax must be paid depends on the car's CO2 emissions. Do you want to know how much tax you have to pay on your new car? You can do so using this table from the IRS.

Motor vehicle tax

Motor vehicle tax (MRB) is the tax you pay annually for using your car. The amount of the tax is calculated based on several factors: the CO2 emissions, the weight of the car, the fuel and the province where you live. With a diesel car, there may also be a particulate matter surcharge to pay. On the site of the tax authorities you can calculate What the MRB is for your car.

MRB for electric cars

Does your car drive fully electric and emit 0 grams of CO2 per kilometer? Then the car is exempt from MRB until 2024. Are the emissions between 1 and 50 grams per kilometer? Then you will pay half the tax rate through 2024. In 2025, you will pay a quarter of the rate for fully electric cars and the full rate for semi-electric cars. Starting in 2026, you will pay the full tax rate for all cars.

Adding

Do you have a company car and do you drive more than 500 kilometers per year with it privately? If so, you will have to pay additional tax on the car. The tax authorities consider your car to be additional income, and taxes must be paid on this income. You can easily keep track of the kilometers driven with the trip recording system from Fleetassist. The additional tax rate for cars emitting more than 0 grams of CO2 per kilometer in 2022 is 22%. The additional tax rate for 2022 cars that emit no CO2 is 16%. For electric cars, the 16% rate applies up to a list value of €35,000. On the amount above that, you pay 22%.
